The Parties

Fourteen of Goldberger’s friends and PHS colleagues had asked to join the contagion test. Like Wheeler, they realized its importance to the health of the country. Most were doctors, including Goldberger’s assistant for the diet experiment at the Georgia State Sanitarium and the head of the Hygienic Laboratory in Washington.

Mary Goldberger wanted to be part of it, too. She later said, “I begged to be one of the volunteers. . . . This was an act of faith; it took no courage.” She was the only woman who participated in the experiment.

For the third test, Goldberger invited Mary and four of the volunteers to a “filth party"—as he called it—at the pellagra hospital in Spartanburg. On a May day, Goldberger ate a pellagra pill and rubbed a pellagrin’s mucous in his nose. The other men did the same. When it was Mary’s turn, they wouldn’t let her swallow the disgusting pill or swab her nose. But she joined the others in having the blood from three pellagrins injected under the skin of her abdomen.

After the party, one of the men developed a sore lymph gland near the site of the blood injection. Neither Mary nor any of the others felt side effects.

As the father of four, Goldberger was particularly saddened by the death of children from pellagra. This girl later died from the disease.
